Mary, Jesus Mother would have been roughly 48 by the time Jesus is crucified. She would have worked hard everyday, been exposed to all kinds of weather and harsh sun, and worried a great deal about her son. My grandmother worked hard in the fields from early in her life, and by the time she was 50 she looked old by todays standards. So I imagined Mary 2000 years earlier, would look at least as old as my Grandmother did at fifty or so. Mary's hand reaches up and she brushes the back of it across Jesus cheek. Then reaches past him to the us, accusing and beseeching us. He is walking toward a narrow gate in the city's wall.
